In an introspective journey marked by highs and lows, Elena Rybakina has faced a challenging 2024 season, grappling with health issues such as insomnia, allergies, and a troublesome back injury. Despite these setbacks, the Kazakh tennis star began the year with a series of impressive victories, claiming titles at the Brisbane International and Abu Dhabi Open, and reaching the finals at the Qatar Open and Miami Open. She continued her success by winning another prestigious title in Stuttgart.

However, as the year progressed, Rybakina’s health woes took a toll, causing her to withdraw from multiple tournaments. Adding to her struggles, she parted ways with her longtime coach Stefano Vukov and announced a new coaching partnership with 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, set to begin in the offseason.

During a recent press conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the WTA Finals are held, Rybakina opened up about her tumultuous year.

Yeah, this year I had a lot of ups and downs starting with sleep problems, like insomnia, whatever it was. Then allergies, then back. When you have such a rhythm, it’s not easy to stop. But after I got used to some rest, I would say. It was really nice.

Bouncing Back with New Energy

After last competing in August at the US Open, Rybakina took a significant break from professional tennis, returning to training just two and a half weeks ago. Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic about her recovery and her return to the court.

Again, it’s not easy to start after this break. But I’m happy with the work we did in the last two weeks. Of course, I’m not maybe at my 100%. Yeah, I’m just looking forward and happy to be healthy now and start playing.
