The tennis world has been rocked by Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension following a doping violation, with opinions sharply divided on whether the punishment was fair. While many have been quick to take sides, Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas has made it clear—he’s not in the business of pointing fingers.
Currently competing at the Qatar Open 2025, Tsitsipas, the sixth seed, is focused on his comeback after disappointing exits in both the Australian Open and the Rotterdam Open earlier this year. But when asked about Sinner’s ban in an interview with BBTennis, he approached the topic with careful consideration.
Tsitsipas on the Jannik Sinner Doping Controversy
Unlike some in the tennis community who have been vocal about their stance, Tsitsipas is refraining from making any definitive judgments.
“I really can’t judge him or say anything about him because I really don’t know what happened. These are very tricky things, I see people pointing fingers and saying this and that,” he stated.
The 26-year-old also revealed that he has tried to put himself in Sinner’s shoes, imagining what it would be like to be in a similar predicament.
“It’s a tricky situation… I have been trying to see myself in that situation—if that happened to me and knowing that, you know, something else might have happened that wasn’t entirely my blame. I can’t really say… these are the type of things that I won’t comment on because I am not entirely sure what’s behind this,” he added.
The Details Behind Sinner’s Three-Month Suspension
Sinner tested positive for Clostebol, a banned substance, in March 2024. While investigations confirmed that he did not deliberately take the drug, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) held him accountable for the negligence of his entourage.
Rather than fight a prolonged legal battle, the Italian opted for a case resolution settlement, agreeing to serve a three-month suspension that will keep him out of competition until May 4, 2025.
While this means missing part of the clay-court season, Sinner is expected to return in time for Roland Garros 2025, avoiding a major disruption to his year.
