Taylor Townsend is no stranger to the demands of professional tennis, but the 28-year-old doubles star is now juggling a new challenge—motherhood. Since giving birth to her son, Adyn Aubrey, in 2021, the two-time Grand Slam doubles champion has had to navigate the highs and lows of being a traveling athlete while staying connected to her son.
Currently in the middle of the WTA Tour’s Middle Eastern swing, Townsend has been away from Adyn for six weeks—something that isn’t ideal, but necessary. Speaking to Essence, the American opened up about the emotional and physical toll of life on tour, saying:
“I’m doing okay. I’m doing well, but it’s also really strange because I won a Grand Slam, and then one day later, I’m in a different country, and I get my a– kicked, and it’s crazy, but that’s just how tennis goes.”
While the intense travel schedule can be grueling, Townsend chooses to embrace the solitude and focus on personal growth.
A Mixed Start to the Season on Court
The new season hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Townsend. In singles, she’s yet to make it past the first round in any tournament in 2025, suffering a tough three-set loss at the Australian Open to Mexico’s Renata Zarazua. But as a doubles specialist, she made up for it in style—partnering with Katerina Siniakova to capture her second Grand Slam title.
Despite the unpredictable nature of the sport, Townsend remains resilient. She understands that tennis is a constant grind, with moments of glory followed by immediate challenges.
Finding Strength in Distance
Being away from Adyn isn’t easy, but Townsend sees the time apart as an opportunity to reflect and grow—not just as a player, but as a mother. She explained:
“I’m really enjoying the time I try to use these opportunities to grow as a person so I come back and I’m able to instill certain lessons in him or certain realizations that I’ve maybe come to while I’ve been gone to help me to be a better mom to him.”
The transition hasn’t been easy, but Townsend has found ways to cope. She makes a conscious effort to connect with her son daily, though time zones often make it challenging. The emotional pull is always there, but she remains committed to both her career and motherhood.
Social Media Keeps Her Connected
While Townsend can’t always be physically present, she maintains an active social media presence, boasting over 100,000 Instagram followers. As Adyn grows up, he’ll have access to a digital record of his mother’s career—a modern way for them to stay connected despite the distance.
Townsend’s story is one of perseverance, sacrifice, and adaptation. She never planned on becoming a mother, but now, she wouldn’t have it any other way. With each match she plays, each lesson she learns, she brings back something new to share with Adyn—proof that even in the chaos of professional sports, there’s always room for love and growth.
